Hopped up on a Friday Night!

I spent last night playing around with the barrel and hop unit of my SR25, I figure while it's still dead I might as well do an autopsy of sorts. It was a good job I did too, I suppose, as that's how I found out the barrel had been rotated from it's proper position in the hop unit, and learned what the inside of a hop unit and barrel looks like with hop applied. I also like how the gearing on the unit is designed to prevent you from over-hopping and could be used to gauge exactly how much hop is being applied.

I'l be honest, I got a little worried when the hop nub fell out, and after a few failed attempts at rolling it back into place with a small screwdriver, I sandwiched it between the barrel window, hop rubber, and the casing of the hop unit itself and slid it all into place. Much easier than I expected, and something I probably would have found out straight away if I had looked on YouTube!

First Post! Wait, What?

This is the first post of my blog, but there will be posts before it - I will be retroactively adding those, but until then, this is the first post of my blog!

I suppose then, I should explain what I'm trying to do with it. I like airsoft, and I like the idea of one shot one kill, I like sniper rifles and DMR's and being stealthy, I like camouflage and ghillie suits. In videogames I like to play it sneaky and at range.

I also have something that doctors tell me is called essential tremor, but what it boils down to is that my hands shake all the time. Probably not the best quality for a sniper or a marksman, but that doesn't stop me trying when I go airsofting. Being 6'2" and over 300lbs it's far from easy, but I like a challenge. I'm big, I'm slow, I'm shaky and I want to be a sniper/marksman - I'm my own worst enemy!

I enjoy blogs, so I've decided to blog about my time as the shaky sniper, that is what this blog is.

I plan on blogging about any game days, airsoft rifles, equipment and anything else I think relevant to the blog. To start with, I plan on building up two rifles, a spring powered Tokyo Marui VSR 10 Pro Sniper and a Wolverine SMP powered G&G SR25 with a long field upper and a short or stubby CQB upper for use at CQB sites or as a side-arm when using the VSR as a primary, something that might not work well, but something I'll find out either way!

The SR25 After a Week!

This is a retroactive post made well after the date it says it was, thanks to the magic that is Blogger when accessed through a browser!

Sweet mother of the deity of your choice! This last week with the SR25 has been eventful.

Hooked up a battery to see how it was shooting. To start with, it was double feeding, don't know if it's the magazine or the hop unit but it was going dry fire - double feed - dry fire - double feed until I decided to try a few rapid pulls of the trigger, which it didn't like at all! Something in the gearbox locked up, including the trigger, which wouldn't budge at all when pulled.

I was expecting a quiet night shift when this happened so I separated the two receiver halves and took the lower to work to strip down the gearbox. First problem was a troublesome pistol grip screw that didn't want to come out, until I borrowed a fancy screwdriver from a guy at work.

On opening the gearbox whatever had been causing the trigger jam unjammed. Being my first time inside a v2 gearbox I had no idea what I was looking at so put everything back together.

On getting home and trying it out, it jammed again straight away. Disconnected the battery, tried to take the pistol grip off but that troublesome screw decided to just completely strip, then on demonstrating how the trigger had jammed to a friend I managed to force the trigger and think I may have snapped something as the motor doesn't turn when the trigger is pulled.

Given my plan to put in a PolarStar I'm not too concerned, I just need to get saving up!

A New Project Rifle!

This is a retroactive post made well after the date it says it was, thanks to the magic that is Blogger when accessed through a browser!

Today I ordered a G&G SR25 Sniper.

By this point I've made no progress with the VSR at all in terms of upgrades, but I've found myself wanting a semi auto rifle, something I can make quick follow-up shots with should I need to! So I'm after a an accuracy focused AEG typically classed as a DMR!

One of the problems with DMRs is that there are sites out there, looking at their websites, that don't acknowledge them. There are bolt actions and there are none bolt actions to them. Sites that do acknowledge DMRs allow them anywhere from 400 to 450 fps, with 425 fps being the average. A PolarStar, that allows for adjustable fps and provides consistent fps sounds like an ideal system for a DMR, except instead of having a big 11.1 volt LiPo in the stock, you've got a high pressure air tank hooked up instead, which you can have fitted onto a specific stock if the idea of an air hose bothers you. I understand there's a lot less tech-work involved with them too, just the occasional internal lubrication, all of which suits me just fine! I am not a tech. I'd love to be able to take the time to learn, but time is something I don't have enough of to start with.

With this in mind, I've gone specifically for the G&G SR25 solely because there is a PolarStar nozzle available for it so that I can drop in a PolarStar, r-hop it, swap out and stabilize the barrel and wind up with a nice "semi-auto sniper" to play with. PolarStar systems aren't cheap though, so it'll take time to get up and running!

VSR Incoming!

This is a retroactive post made after the date it says it was, thanks to the magic that is Blogger when accessed through a browser!

Today I have ordered a Tokyo Marui VSR 10 Pro Sniper, a scope rail, a pack of barrel spacers, a 14mm counter-clockwise adapter and an additional magazine.

The plan, in time, is to upgrade it to a point where it's firing close to 500fps on .20s, the generally accepted velocity for a bolt action sniper rifle, along with any other upgrades needed to make it reach out and touch people!
